WINDFALL WINS KENTUCKY MODIFIED**** By Kim MacMillan The 2004 Rolex Kentucky Three–Day Event hosted two four-star divisions this year, the full three-day CCI**** and the Bayer Modified Four-Star Three-day Event, which was based on the format that will be used at the Olympic Games in Athens in August. The Modified Four-Star was offered at the request of the United States Equestrian Federation (formerly the AHSA and then USAEq) and was open to riders who are U.S. citizens or residents of North America who, with the entered horse, have already met the Olympic qualifying requirements. Two Trakehners and their riders qualified for the Modified Four-Star division, the 12-year-old approved stallion WINDFALL (by Habicht, out of Wundermädel xx by Madruzzo xx, bred by Heinz Lembke, Kaufbeuren, FRG, owned by Dr. Timothy Holekamp, Columbia, MO), ridden by Darren Chiacchia, Springville, NY, and Ocala, FL, and the 13-year-old gelding LESTER PIGGOTT (by Sir Shostakovich xx, out of Louisiana II by Tizian, bred by Maria Hoogen, Vogelsangshof, Kevelaer, FRG, owned by Bernardo and Marie Piskorz, Middleburg, VA) ridden by Holly Hepp, Middleburg, VA. Rainy weather and muddy conditions marred most days of the event this year, with rain the day before dressage and on both dressage days as well as on Sunday morning for the stadium jumping phase of the Modified Four-star. The only clear day was Saturday for the endurance phase and, although the ground on the cross-country course was not deep mud, it was “sticky,” according to the riders. After two days of dressage, Windfall and Chiacchia were in second place with a penalty score of 40, behind Natalie Bouckaert and West Farthing who scored 37. Windfall's test was a solid one, with only one uncharacteristically late flying change.
Lester Piggott and Holly Hepp stood in a respectable eleventh place out of 38 starters after dressage with a score of 50.2. Endurance day for the Modified Four-Star horses consisted of a short roads and tracks phase and then the cross-country run. The Modified horses ran in the afternoon and time was hard to make, with only five incurring no time penalties by the end of the afternoon. Eight horses and riders were either eliminated, retired on course, or withdrew before starting cross-country. At the end of the day, Bouckaert and West Farthing remained in first place with 38.6 penalty points, with Chiacchia and Windfall close behind with 41.2, both pairs having only 1.2 time faults on cross-country. Lester Piggott and Holly Hepp were ninth to go cross-country in the afternoon. They jumped clean, but were well over the time and had 23.2 penalty points added to their dressage score, leaving them in nineteenth place after cross-country.
Windfall and Chiacchia went third to last in the afternoon. Windfall's owner, Dr. Tim Holekamp, described his horse's run: “He started off very well, with good speed and a very calm attitude. They cruised along, with Darren in excellent control and ‘W' looking completely happy in his work, with his usual long gallop stride. The jumps were the biggest he has ever seen — four-star for the first time in his life, and a REAL four star at that. Maximum heights the whole way and a maximum number of jumping elements (about 43 as I recall).” Holekamp continued, “He just kept going like the ‘Eveready Bunny,' right through the terrifying Head of the Lake complex at the water, with smooth riding the whole time. I could tell he was fast, it just had to be! On the third to the last, an offset maximum double house jump, complete with thatched roofs, Darren got a little out of rhythm over the second element, lost his whip in the scramble and decided to take the second to last complex (Editor's note: the Lexington Bank where many problems had occurred all day) the slower, alternate way, due only to the lack of a whip. They sailed home only three seconds over the optimum time and ended the day less than three points off the lead in a very solid second place, with no nearby competition.”
Chiacchia praised Windfall after cross-country: “I am just thrilled with this horse. People doubted whether he could jump around a course like this, but I never doubted him for a minute! He just ate it up! I am very proud of my horse.” Windfall passed the last horse inspection with no problems on Sunday morning. Lester Piggott, unfortunately, was not presented for inspection and therefore did not do the stadium jumping. It was learned later that “Lester” had a slightly sore suspensory ligament behind, and though Hepp said she felt he would have jogged sound during the inspection, she did not want to risk jumping him that day. Chiacchia and Windfall put in their usual good show- jumping round despite the muddy, rainy conditions but had the last rail down. This gave a little breathing room to Bouckaert and West Farthing, who were the last to jump, but they had a refusal at the first fence and two rails down to finish in seventh place, giving the win to Windfall and Chiacchia. Phillip Dutton of Australia and Hannigan, finished second, John Williams and Carrick were third.
At the press conference following the event, Chiacchia remarked on their chances of being selected to the US Olympic Team: “The horse has an amazing record, he's been prepared well, and I think I've prepared myself well. I think Windfall has answered all of the questions, but it is still up to the Selectors. We've positioned ourselves well, and Windfall has proven that he is a horse that you can count on for a world-class performance in all three phases.” (Editor's note: By decision of the event organizer, the winner of the Modified Four-Star received a measly $1,500 in prize money while Kim Severson, the winner of the CCI****, took home $60,000!)

ATA BOOTH AT ROLEX KENTUCKY 3-DAY EVENT By Jane Volberding, Booth CoordinatorNeither rain nor wind nor sloppy turf kept ATA volunteers from their appointed rounds. We experienced it all, even some sunshine at the 2004 Rolex 3-Day Event. Excitement was running at an all-time high because we knew that Holly Hepp/Lester Piggot and Darren Chiacchia/Windfall were among the top contenders in the first running of the Bayer Modified Four-Star Event, the exact format to be used at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. I am pleased to report that the ATA booth was a resounding success – a reflection of the success of our superior Trakehners. Volunteers reported on duty as scheduled, many provided more hours than scheduled. ATA members submitted wonderful photographs of their Trakehners in action - beautiful, sweet photos of horses and their feline friends, junior competitors, professionals and amateurs – young stock and mature horses. The photos were a distinct drawing card for the crowds that came through the main tent to avoid the weather. The booth display kit proved itself again this year, surviving gale-force winds and rain – inside the tent! We had a number of new items to help promote our horses – photo frames, insulated lunch coolers (or horse treat bags), saddle covers, metal key chains, briefcase totes, magnetic vehicle signs and pewter license plates – to add to the array of t-shirts, sweats, polos, caps, saddle pads, mugs and magazines. All 500 copies of back issues of the magazine were distributed to the relief of the office staff! A special thank you goes to Holly Hoffman of Ginger Ridge Horse Treats for donating samples (with the ATA label on them) for us to give as free handouts to visitors – a great promotion for the “horsey” set! The best was yet to come. Tim Holekamp, owner of Windfall and his family supplied us with T-shirts and caps to really get the crowds thinking Trakehners Rule! They also worked with our president Allen MacMillan and general manager Charee Adams to produce an ATA poster, featuring Windfall and Darren. And to the delight of the crowds, Darren stopped by for photos and to sign posters and T-shirts. And it was especially sweet because they won!
As the coordinator, it was gratifying to see the volunteers step up and get into the business of promotion. They were a source of first-hand knowledge of the wonders of our horses. The booth was never quiet, never empty of visitors. Sales lists and stallion information were the ace in the hole – no one left without something Trakehner in their hands. We grossed over $3,000 but, more important, it seems we made a number of converts to our horses. I want to extend a special thank you to Mae Jean Fichter of Mae's Way Trakehners in Lexington. Each year she hosts a Trakehner showcase at her farm and invites the public from Rolex to visit, providing free food and beverages and the opportunity to see horses from newborns to champion stallions up close and personal. This year was no exception and to our surprise, Schoenfeld was shown under saddle performing like the star he knows he is! I see 2004 as a banner year for the Trakehner – Rolex was the start. Athens, here we come!

INSPECTION SCHEDULE CHANGE Please note that the Mare Inspection scheduled for August 14, 2004, in Fort Collins, CO, had to be canceled due to the unavailability of the organizer. We hope that those planning to bring horses to be inspected or branded at that site, or just to observe, will find another site suitable for them. Otherwise, please re-nominate your horses for next year to enable us to set an inspection site in your area. INDIANA MARE INSPECTION If you have a mare or young horse to be inspected at the Valparaiso, IN, site on Sept. 11, 2004, please contact the site hosts, Kim MacMillan, 260-468-2392 or looncrek@citznet.com, or Kristin Crowe, 219-762-0447 or klcrowe@yahoo.com, no later than July 9 , to let them know that you will be attending. There will also be an ATA brander at this site, so if you have a horse in the Midwest that needs to be branded ( even if the horse does NOT need to be inspected ), please plan to bring it to this site to be branded. All people with horses to be branded should plan on splitting the cost of the brander's travel expense, as the branders are volunteers. For a horse to be branded, you must have its registration complete and branding fees paid at the ATA Main Office before July 31. The inspection and branding will take place at the Porter County Fairgrounds in Valparaiso, IN. Costs of the fairgrounds rental will be rolled into the stall costs and split among participants. Food will be available on grounds and there are several hotels and a campground nearby. The ATA booth will also be open for people to purchase sportswear, saddle pads, glassware, books and other ATA promotional items. The site hosts will send out specific information with directions, lodging and fees to all who contact them by July 9. (Completed inspection applications must be in the ATA office by July 31.) For those who wish to make that weekend a family outing, there will also be a car show and a balloon festival going on at the fairgrounds that weekend. The Indiana Dunes State Park and National Dunes Lakeshore, the Deep River Water Park, shopping and concerts at the Holiday Star Theatre in Merrillville, IN, are within a reasonable travel distance from the fairgrounds. FULLY APPROVED It pleases us to report that the stallion Tzigane
has fulfilled his performance requirement on October 18-19, 2003, by placing second of 27 in the Open Novice Division at the Fall Horse Trials at Greenwood Farm, TX. We apologize for being so late with this announcement, but your newsletter editor has just been informed. In the meantime, Tzigane has moved up to the Training division where he has also been quite successful. Congratulations! MORE STALLIONS BREEDING 10 OR MORE MARES IN 2003

Carol Schuehler - www.emeer.usIn Memoriam — Joyce Kuhn Dear ATA: Sunday, May 2, on the way home from the Blue Angel Dressage Show in Pensacola, FL, Joyce Lynn Kuhn, 42, an ATA member since 1989, was hit head-on by a man driving the wrong way on Interstate 10. Joyce and her dog, Hannah, were killed instantly. Miraculously, the two horses Engel and Cezanne (a Trakehner she bred), survived with minor injuries. Joyce loved Trakehners and loved dressage. She had Cezanne entered in the ATA futurity this year and had shown him at his first recognized show. He was a trooper at the show, even though he was terrified of the indoor arena and had to be led (through a cattle gate!) into the 20-meter enclosure around the ring. Once in the ring, Joyce was able to diplomatically guide this little 5-year-old keg of dynamite through a wonderful dressage test. Joyce was delighted with her ride, and scored, in her words, "a 66 and change!" He was out of her mare Cimbra (Amiego *Ps*E* - Antares), whom she adored, and Joyce was thrilled that he might actually have a work ethic like his mom. Joyce was known to everyone for her smile and positive attitude. She never had a bad word to say about anyone and loved a good time and showing with her friends. Joyce is survived by her husband Larry, who supported her in her dreams of breeding and showing Trakehners, and her daughter Jessica who, at 3 years old, was already "riding" Engel, a Grand Prix level mare and had learned to adeptly clean a stall with her own little rake. Joyce will be missed by all in the horse community who knew and loved her. Monica Colquett. HIGH SCORE DRESSAGE

General editorial material and ads are due September 1. Forms for the Mare & Foal Profiles are available on the ATA Web site at www.americantrakehner. com. They were also inserted in the May/June 2004 Trakehner Times . Since we are working with a new publisher this time, it is very important that we strictly observe all deadlines. Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated. IN MEMORIAM — Tapferkeit
Bonnie Brabbs informs us that her mare Tapferkeit was euthanized on May 26, 2004, after suffering from multiple problems. She produced 12 outstanding foals, two of which were twins and died at birth. Unfortunately, only nine of “Taffy's” offspring were ATA registered; therefore she was not eligible as an “Honor Roll Mare.” Tapferkeit was the dam of the 1999 Approved Stallion TIMOTHEUS by E.H. Caprimond and, through her daughter TAUROSE *E*, grandam of the 1996 Approved Stallion TRADITION *Pb* and the 1998 Approved Stallion TIGRE, both by Bütow *E*. VESICULAR STOMATITIS REGULATIONS The American Horse Council (AHC) reports that all horses being exported from the United States to the European Union (EU) now require a negative (1:12) virus neutralization test for Vesicular Stomatitis (VS). The test samples must be taken within 10 days prior to export for temporary export horses, and within 21 days prior to export for horses being permanently exported to the EU. In accordance with EU regulations, this test requirement will remain in place until six months after the VS outbreak which was confirmed in Southwest Texas on May 19, 2004. The National Center for Import and Export will provide a target date when the time comes. EU horses currently in the U.S. and scheduled to return to the EU must be certified not to have been on an affected premise during their time in the United States. Currently posted equine export certificates provide for these changes. No U.S. horses can be certified for entry into the EU until test results are reported. Vesicular Stomatitis is a viral disease characterized by fever, vesicles (blisters), and subsequent erosions in the mouth and epithelium on the teats and feet. Horses are particularly susceptible, but cattle and pigs are also susceptible; sheep and goats are rarely affected. The clinical signs of VS in cattle and pigs are virtually indistinguishable from foot and mouth disease making the disease a significant concern. Laboratory confirmation is needed when the disease appears in cattle and pigs. Humans can also be infected through contact with open blisters. In another release, AHC reports that Kentucky has closed its borders to all horses from the area of Texas south of Route 70 and west of Route 83 and from New Mexico. All horses coming from these areas and surrounding states must have an entry permit including a negative C-Elisa test for VS taken within ten days, a veterinary certificate that states that the horse does not originate from an area under quarantine for VS and has been examined and found to be free of VS. There will be inspections along the state line to verify the above. These inspections will include a physical inspection of the animal being brought into Kentucky from Texas. PERFORMANCE REPORTS FROM GERMANY By Maren Engelhardt CIC Marbach, Germany Several Trakehner horses did well in the recent CIC*/** divisions at the South German town of Marbach. The CIC** was won by the mare MISS MELLER by Amatcho - Matador under Michael Jung (45.4 points). The mare had been a broodmare for most of her life and only started to event in 2003. In the same division, RUPRECHT by Donaumonarch - EH Consul placed 6th with Elmar Lesch (71.8 points). Elmar, who is a member of the Trakehner Verband stallion inspection commission, has recently taken over the ride on two of Andreas Dibowski's best mounts, the Trakehner geldings HERAKLES TSF by Ghazzir and RUPRECHT. Andreas has health problems and wants to focus on his two other horses for the Athens Olympics. The CIC* division saw the gray, former Neumünster stallion candidate FINCH HATTON by Suchard, out of a TB mare, and Carola Bierlein in fifth place (49.0 points). Vallensbaek, Denmark; Roosendaal, The Netherlands; CDN Bad Salzuflen, Germany The weekend of May 8th was another highly successful one for Trakehner dressage horses in Europe. The PSG at the Danish Vallensbaek was a "two-man show" for two approved Trakehners. BLUE HORS HERTUG by E.H. Schwadroneur and his rider Andreas Helgstrand won the class with a score of 69.91%, one place ahead of the bay premium stallion KAISER WILHELM by E.H. Lehndorffs (68.42%) under Anke ter Beek. In addition, Hertug also won a Fourth Level test with a score of 70.51%. At the show in Roosedaal, The Netherlands, a former Trakehner shooting star celebrated a great comeback: GESTION ICTENOS by Sir Chamberlain was approved in Neumünster in 1996 and soon after was sold to Anky van Grunsven. They had an excellent show season, and the pair won the Reserve World Champion title at the FEI World Championships for Young Dressage Horses in Amsterdam. A terrible accident left Ictenos crippled for a long time and his performance career now starts again after four years out of the ring. He placed second in the Prix St. Georges in Roosendaal under Anky van Grunsven (70.75%). The CDN Bad Salzuflen was the first of a series of highly important shows for the Olympic trials for the German dressage team, and Anja Ploentzke took the shooting star of the last Grand Prix season in Germany, the bay approved stallion SOLERO (Hyllos - Polargeist) to this important event. They returned with a great sixth place in the Grand Prix (70.21%) and a 10th place in the Grand Prix Special (67.24%) against the "creme de la creme" of Germany's dressage scene. The chestnut gelding SACHSENKÖNIG by Handryk and Katrin Bettenworth placed 16th in the Grand Prix (65.34%) and the PSG saw the younger EVANO by Sir Chamberlain under Jana Kun in eighth place (63.4%); they also placed seventh in the Intermediaire I division (65.2%). The CNC*** Gaerds in Sweden proved to be a good venue for the gray gelding HERAKLES TSF and his rider Andreas Dibowski, who finished fourth. LATE, SAD NEWS Marie-Luise Barton Long-time Trakehner breeder and ATA member Marie-Luise Barton, 77, died of heart failure on June 2, 2004, at her home in Sorento, IL. Born in Solingen, Germany, she married industrialist Karl-Heinz Barton in October 1950. After Mr. Barton was killed in an accident, Mrs. Barton immigrated to the US in November 1979 with her two daughters, Ricarda and Renate, bringing two approved Trakehner stallions and more than a dozen top quality Trakehner mares with them. The Bartons purchased land in south central Illinois and started their Castell Imperator-Hof Trakehner breeding farm with their stallions AVIGNON II (by Flaneur, out of Arcticonius xx by Apollonius xx) and RICARDO (by Index, out of Rastenburg by Isländer). Mrs. Barton was the breeder of four ATA approved breeding stallions: PAJOU (by Avignon II), DANZIG, TAUSENDSASSA and TAUROGGEN (all by Ricardo). Several Barton-bred mares have also produced approved sons and competition horses. Among the successful horses of Castell Imperator-Hof breeding are BARON PALAZZO by Avignon II, the 1986 AHSA National First-Year Green Hunter Champion, and KAPSTADT VOM CASTELL, also by Avignon II, 2001 USDF/ATA All-Breeds award winner at Fourth Level Adult-Amateur. In 1984, Mrs. Barton sponsored the Karl-Heinz Barton trophy in memory of her late husband, which has been awarded annually to an individual for exemplary service to the ATA. In addition to her daughters, Mrs. Barton leaves three grandsons, Markus Wall and Gabriel and David Ramirez. The family requests that, if desired, memorial donations be sent to the American Trakehner Foundation, 1514 W. Church St., Newark, OH 43055.
