THE 2003 ATA MEMBERSHIP MEETING

Roughly 150 ATA members met in Auburn, WA, under sunny, though a bit cold skies and enjoyed each other and their horses. Four stallions were presented for approval, unfortunately none was approved.

Thursday, the first day of the Annual Meeting, brought several activities at Donida Farm, including the Mare Show and the mare inspections, also a parade of sale horses and a lecture about choosing the right stallion for your mare by Nancy Montana.

The Welcome Reception Thursday evening was held at the hotel, preceded by a nutrition lecture by Lynn Sinner and followed by a short discussion of important European bloodlines by Katrin Gerber as well as a wrap-up of the 2003 Neumünster inspection and auction, given by Hubertus Poll and Christina Potter.

The actual membership meeting on Friday morning saw a very interested crowd who freely voiced their opinions but always in a positive manner.

The Treasurer's report, which represents only the first nine months of fiscal year 2003, given by Marcia Johnson was accepted without discussion.

The various committee chairmen reported the following:

The 2004 annual membership meeting will be in Toronto, Ontario, from November 11-14, to coincide with the Toronto Royal Winter Fair. All horse activities will be at the York Equestrian center, the site where the 1986 World Equestrian Dressage Championships were held. The 2005 meeting is planned for Houston, TX. Annual Meeting Chairman Becky Armstrong will be compiling a detailed checklist for putting on an annual meeting and requests input from anyone who has ever hosted such an event.

Branding chairman Tim Holekamp reported that controversial changes in legislation have occurred in some European countries about the application of hot brands. He suggested that we here in America will continue to offer the brand as an elective procedure.

Under Corporate Regulations members were asked to vote on seven proposed amendments (for text see September/ October 2003 Trakehner Times).

Amendment No. 1, which specifies that the chairman of the Inspection Committee be selected by the Board of Trustees, was accepted by voice vote.

Amendment No. 2, relating to the Inspection Committee Review Committee, was tabled as the change from five to seven members of that committee was not clear to the membership.

Amendment No. 3, relating to posthumous registration of a mare, was amended to specify that it referred only to a "purebred Trakehner" mare and was then approved.

Amendment No. 4, relating to the possible use of frozen embryos of approved stallions, was tabled because, again, the meaning of the difference between the original "bred" and the proposed "conceived" was not clear to members.

Amendment No. 5, relating to approved stallions that were gelded before their frozen semen was used, was voted down by the membership which means that any stallion owner who wants to use frozen semen from a stallion that is now gelded must continue to first obtain the approval of two thirds of the Board of Trustees.

Amendment No. 6, removing the restriction of one foal per year per mare (or a set of twins), and Amendment No. 7, eliminating the requirement for a veterinarian to inseminate a mare and sign the breeding certificate, were both approved.

It was suggested that members provide comments on the tabled amendments to any Board member before the Spring Board meeting (March 5-6, 2004) so that clarifications on these amendment may be formulated.

When it was announced that Jim Bishop, an employee of ATA member John Krenger, had resigned as the advertising chairman for the ATA magazine due to time constraints, Bonnie Brabbs of Grass Valley, CA, volunteered to take over for him. Thanks, Bonnie!

Under New Business, Melissa Garner of Memphis, TN, moved to do away with the part-Trakehner brand. She presented a selection of alternatives that she thought would be more popular with horse owners. Since, however, most of her designs incorporated the moose antler logo which is owned by the Trakehner Verband, her motion was tabled for further study.

Another motion was made to exempt stallions who had attained the *Pb* performance designation from the free-jumping phase in the inspection. There was no second.

The elections of officers and trustees saw all members proposed by the Nominations Committee elected.

The Nominations Committee for 2004 will be composed of Wallace Cullen, Neal Westgerdes and Jean Brinkman elected by the membership. The Board later added Fred Rockhold and Tina Potter. These five people will get together in some form sometime in the new year to select a chairman and develop a slate for 2004.

At the conclusion of the meeting, members returned to Donida Farm where the stallion inspection continued and Carol Brett gave an interesting lecture on the biomechanics of movement in relation to saddle fit.

Trakehner Verband representative Hubertus Poll and his son Christian gave a demonstration on how to show a stallion prospect. Christian presented three stallions that were completely unfamiliar to him, with his father explaining what he was doing and why he was doing it. The three stallions -- Kougar von C, Sinatra and Ichi-Ban -- behaved beautifully and showed themselves well.

In the evening, the Awards Banquet took place at the lovely facility of Emerald Downs racetrack with a delicious buffet capped by the best-ever cheesecake.

On Saturday, the last day of the meeting, noted authority Dr. Juan Samper lectured on the factors involved in embryo transfer. Brad Kerbs and Sam Eidt presented a judging contest in which the Inspection Committee first evaluated four horses and then had ATA members do their own judging. Their marks were compared with those of the committee and the person coming closest to their marks and reasons for giving them was declared the winner. It turned out that there was a tie between Susanne Harfst of Yakima, WA, and Pam Norton of Hockley, TX. Future members of the Inspection Committee

Immediately following the judging contest, Pam Norton gave a short demonstration on equine portrait photography.

After warming up and invigorating themselves with wine and cheese and a hearty bar-b-que dinner, members were treated to the Performance Exhibition in which a stallion parade showing Kougar von C, Ichi-Ban, Prelude by Mozart and Sinatra was followed by various impressive numbers:

Ichi-Ban under Lynne Salewski presented a lovely First Level Musical Freestyle ride in costume

Sinatra ridden by Anita Hunter, Jr., and Fabius handled by Erin Jorgenson showed off father and son

Zoltan MV and Erin Katona showed their winning form with a Prix St. Georges Freestule that was ridden flawlessly

Former ATA Futurity winner Farrari (by Martini *Pg*E*) and Debbie Evans also showed an FEI level musical freestyle with aplomb

Prelude by Mozart was presented by Bonnie Hendra in a free-jumping exhibition that included a 5' fence

The 14-year-old part-Trakehner stallion Agincourt by Abdullah *Pg*E*, out of a Hanoverian mare, owned by Judy Hedreen, Arlington, WA, and formerly ridden in Open Jumper competitions by Hap Hansen, was shown by Megan Burrows in a combination dressage and jumping exhibition. This was followed by a presentation of some of his get.

The show concluded with a special presentation to Sue and Terry Williams honoring the memory of their unforgettable stallion Abdullah. Thanks to all of them for braving the cold and showing us their horses!

FROM THE BOARD

The ATA Board of Trustees met in a marathon session on Wednesday, November 5, 2003, in Auburn, WA, and decided the following:

The remaining copies of Dr. Schilke's book "Trakehner Horses -- Then and Now" will now be available for $19.95 a copy (plus shipping and handling). Purchasers of ten or more copies in one shipment will be charged $15.00 a copy plus shipping.

The Inspection Committee requested, and was granted, a 60-day deadline for stallion inspection applications at which time all the paperwork and all fees for a stallion candidate must be in the ATA office. The reason for this extended deadline is that the inspectors purchase non-refundable airline tickets which, if the inspection is canceled on short notice, will be a loss to the ATA treasury.

A mandatory under-saddle phase will be added to the inspection procedure in addition to the other phases for stallions 4 years old and older.

There will be no re-inspection of approved mares. Only mares that were entered into the OSB without marks are eligible to come for voluntary marks.

The Committee on Exceptional Stallions and Mares is now free to determine the performance designations for stallions on its own, in the same way it determines the mare designations. The designation of Elite Stallions will still be made by the Board.

With 2004 being the 30th anniversary year of the founding of the ATA, the Board has decided to offer another registration amnesty effective January 1, 2004, in which every Trakehner or Trakehner cross eligible for registration will be registered at the minimum fee of $85 ($40 for geldings) and no penalty for late submission of the breeding certificate will be assessed. All other fees remain the same. To qualify for this amnesty, complete registration applications must be received in the ATA Office by December 31, 2004.

Dr. Robert Baird's book "Conformation and the Sport Horse Breeder" is now available from the ATA office for $7.50 plus shipping and handling.

The ATA will pay $100 toward the expenses for a Trakehner class at Dressage at Devon in 2004, the remainder having to be raised by the participants. For the booth at the Rolex three-day event, the ATA will pay one third of the booth expenses.

Volume IV of the ATA Mare Book, which is just about finished, will not be published in paper form but will be available on a CD for interested members. Format and costs will be worked out and announced in the near future.

Upon recommendation by the Inspection Committee, the stallions Feuertänzer and Savant were not granted extensions for meeting their performance requirements and are now no longer approved. Once they complete the required horse trial at the Training level, they may be fully reinstated.

Becky Armstrong was appointed the new chairman of the Annual Meeting Committee.

From the President

Thank You, Seattle!

We just finished an excellent annual meeting in the Northwest. Hopefully you were able to join us as we combined horse inspections, meetings, unseasonably dry weather, a lunar eclipse, old friends and new friends into an exciting four days of activities.

Several people spent a long time planning, many helped at the last minute, and we all pitched in to make it a success. And now, while it is fresh in everyone's mind, we want to hear from you. We are adding to "the handbook" for which Becky Armstrong has been gathering, and will continue to gather, feedback from the last several years and put it into a "how-to" book on putting on an annual meeting.

So, tell us what you like, what you don't, what's important and what's not. Big things and little things are all welcome. Every meeting will be a little bit different, but we want each one to be memorable. You can help. Future newsletters will have specific questions and feedback forms, but for now send your thoughts to atameeting-2003@earthlink.net.

I would also like to thank all of the Committee Chairmen and their committee members for their hard work on various projects throughout 2003. The committee chairmen are listed elsewhere in this newsletter. I encourage anyone who wishes to work on a committee to contact them with their ideas.

Thank you! Allen MacMillan

Thanks to all of them!

ATA EMERGENCY & ROAD TRAVEL GUIDE

Hurricanes, California fires, tornadoes and Mother Nature have played havoc on us all. Whether leisurely traveling or escaping rapidly to a safe haven, it is important for peace of mind to know farms and friends along the way where we could stop to bed our horses, ourselves, or the availability of local motels.

If you are interested in being a part of this plan throughout the United States and Canada, please fill out the form below and fax or mail it to Ruthanne Faine-Gardner, Joint Venture Farm, 10671 N SR 53, Madison, FL 32340 or e-mail to Ruthanne at mjgardner@digitalexp.com. She will try to organize the involved farms and disseminate the collected information to all members as soon as possible.

THREE NEW GERMAN ELITE STALLIONS

Newly crowned with the title "Elite Stallion" (E.H.) were the following three stallions:

FRIEDENSFÜRST by Rondo, out of Frieda by Gelria, posthumously for his accomplishments in dressage under U.S. rider Lisa Wilcox, his two approved sons, Patmos and Lücke, and his highly valued get..

GRIBALDI by Kostolany, out of Gondola by Ibikus, for his three approved sons, Distelzar, Hofrat and Hoftänzer, his accommplishments in dressage up to the upper levels and his outstanding get.

MICHELANGELO by Pasteur xx, out of Miami by Matador, for his six approved sons, Kennedy, Guy Laroche, Hirtenruf, Kensington, Hölderlin and Summertime, and the general excellence of his get.

The stallion SOLERO RBS, by Hyllos, out of Siri Arabella by Polargeist, was declared 2003 Trakehner of the Year. In the 2003 show season, this stallion was the most successful Trakehner breeding stallion competing in dressage under his rider Anja Plönzke with wins and placings up to Grand Prix. Solero RBS was also declared 2003 Trakehner Dressage Horse of the Year.

Another, similar honor, Trakehner Stallion of the Year, was won by the stallion SCHWADRONEUR by E.H. Arogno, out of E.St. Schwalbenburg by Ibikus. Foaled in 1983 and standing in Denmark, but available for German mares by frozen semen. The Trakehner Verband Board of Directors determined that Schwadroneur deserved this honor on the basis of his own performance and that of his get who made him known as an outstanding dressage horse producer. Unfortunately, only four weeks after the presentation of this award, Schwardroneur died from organ failure. He leaves two approved sons, Hertug and Sharan.

For the fourth year in a row, the title of Trakehner Jumper of the Year went to the stallion WAITAKI by Orfej, out of Khromotipja by Pris xx, who, under his owner/rider Holger Hetzel, was the most successful Open Jumper stallion in Samsung Nations Cups during 2001 and 2002.

Trakehner Event Horse of the Year was BIOSTHETIK'S BUNBURY, a mare by Parforce ridden by Michael Jung, who competed internationally at the three-star level.

Driving Horse of the Year was again the mare GRAZIELA TSF with Ulla Günther who continued to compete in top level driving competitions.

Another happy piece of news from Germany is that ATA member Eileen Poole, Sherwood Park, AB, purchased the 12-year-old stallion FEINGEIST by Van Deyk, out of Fire Lady by Matador.

Klaus WITTLICH, former president of the Trakehner Verband, well known to ATA members from his visits to ATA annual meetings, is now the president of the Trakehner Förderverein, his vice president is Katrin Poll, wife of Hubertus Poll, Hörem, Trakehner Verband representative to the ATA Annual Meeting in Auburn, WA. The other officers are Martin Mehrtens, Dr. Astrid von Velsen-Zerweck and Michael Rahlke.

NEW INFO ON EPM

LEXINGTON, Ky., Nov. 19 /PRNewswire/

The revised edition of "Understanding EPM" contains the latest information on the most commonly diagnosed equine neurological disease in North America. WINDFALL x LARISSA SUPERFOALS

The people around Larissa *Pg* and Windfall *Pg* have recently discussed the intriguing prospect of crossing the two top Trakehner event horses in the world by means of embryo transfer and are seeking input from ATA members who might have an interest in the idea.

The plan would be to generate several embryos by in vitro fertilization and implant as many surrogate mares as possible. Investment by prospective foal owners would fund the project and might be of tremendous potential for furthering the Trakehner breed in the sport horse world. There is a need to identify ATA members who are interested in what could become a very successful "nick" of horse breeding. If you are one of these, please contact Bruce Mandeville at 519-766- 8854 or e-mail to bman@golden.net.

FROM THE USEA

Tim Holekamp, owner of 2004 Palmenblüte award winner Windfall *Pg*, was just notified that his stallion has won the USEA's Horse of the Year honor and will be awarded the Cäsar Memorial Cup that Pat and Dave Goodman donated to the then USCTA in memory of their late stallion Cäsar by Donauschimmer at the same time they donated the Cäsar Cup to the ATA for the approved stallion who excelled in eventing each year.

To our knowledge this is the first time that one and the same horse has won both Cäsar Cups in the same year. Way to go, Windfall!
