Three Stirrups Stables, owned by Dorothy Scudamore and Gary Sandberg, is situated 15 minutes drive north of the Canada/US border, approximately 1 hour from Vancouver, BC and 2 ½ hours from Seattle, Washington. We principally breed Trakehners, but also have Westphalians and Hungarian Warmbloods. Our farm features a 20 x 60 m indoor arena, two outdoor rings, two lunging rings, stalls for 18 horses and ponies and to be completed this year, a 2000 m cross-country course.

Many people ask where the name comes from. The name comes from the Scudamore family coat of arms which carries three stirrups. The coat of arms originates from the Normans and was presented to the family during the time of the Crusades. There has been a long association between the Scudamore family and horses. Peter Scudamore, winner of the Grand National is a cousin of Dorothy and Dorothy did the principal training of the international event horse "Avalanche" which Nick Holmes-Smith rode for Canada National Team.

We both ride and while our main focus is dressage, we still jump and believe it to be a necessary part of any horse's training. We believe that something is missing in the show-horse world as dressage has become somewhat mechanical with the focus so much on precision and accuracy. The Trakehner offers the flair that seems to be missing and this is the attraction of the breed to us, as well as the breed's personality and intelligence.
